MEDININAGAR – A woman from Kala Pahad village in Palamu district died after an unqualified doctor’s botched surgery at an illegal nursing home in Hussainabad.
Poonam Devi, daughter of Nagdev Yadav, had been admitted to Ujjwal Nursing Home for childbirth. Akhilesh Paswan, an unlicensed practitioner operating the facility, performed the surgery. Excessive bleeding followed, and Poonam was referred to RIMS in Ranchi, where she died during treatment.
Police and Medical Authorities Take Swift Action
Following Poonam’s death, her family returned to Chhatarpur with her body. Allegedly, Paswan’s associates offered the family ₹2.5 lakh to suppress the incident. However, the matter reached Palamu Civil Surgeon Dr. Anil Kumar Singh, who immediately directed the nursing home’s sealing. Hussainabad medical officer Dr. Vinay Kumar executed the order and initiated legal proceedings.
Unlicensed Practice and Its Consequences
This incident underscores the dangers of unauthorized medical facilities in Jharkhand. Local sources report that Paswan had been operating without proper qualifications. The issue of unlicensed practitioners is a persistent concern in rural areas, where healthcare access remains limited.
Broader Implications and Future Steps
The police are investigating Paswan’s activities and any possible connections to similar cases. A local health official commented, “This tragedy reflects a critical gap in healthcare oversight, particularly in underserved regions.”
Authorities stress that stricter enforcement of medical regulations is necessary to prevent such incidents. The incident has also sparked demands for better access to quality healthcare in rural Jharkhand.
