Jugsalai Police Bust Codeine Syrup Network with Kolkata Links

Amjad Ali, Dhatkidih Medical Store, and Unknown Kolkata Supplier Named in FIR as Interstate Drug Racket Exposed

Key Points:

  • Amjad Ali arrested near Kharkhai rail bridge with codeine syrup, Corex tablets
  • Accused bought drugs from Dhatkidih store; supplies traced to Kolkata source
  • Police file FIR against three; probe interstate network’s scale and reach

JAMSHEDPUR — A man from Garib Nawaz Colony was arrested near the Kharkhai rail overbridge by Jugsalai police, exposing an interstate codeine cough syrup racket with links to Kolkata.

Police had received a tip-off. A youth was allegedly selling prohibited medicines near the Kharkhai Rail Over Bridge. A raid by Jugsalai police followed immediately. Amjad Ali was apprehended on the spot during the operation.

During his search, officers found 10 bottles of codeine-laced cough syrup. Moreover, 52 pieces of Corex tablets were also seized from him. Both items are banned for sale without valid prescription and authorization.

During questioning, Ali disclosed his modus operandi. He was reportedly buying medicines from a medical store in Dhatkidih. He then sold them to youth and addicts across various localities. However, the more significant revelation concerned the supply chain.

Ali told investigators that the drug supply to Dhatkidih originated from Kolkata. In other words, consignments of banned medicines were being regularly dispatched from Kolkata to the store. On the basis of the interrogation, police lodged a first information report. The FIR named three parties: Ali himself, the owner of the Dhatkidih medical store, and an unidentified supplier from Kolkata.

Investigators are now working to establish how long this network had been operational. They are also trying to determine the total number of individuals involved in the chain. According to a source familiar with the investigation, “The supply network appears to have been running for quite some time before this arrest.”

Jamshedpur has seen similar seizures before. Earlier this year, 22 packets of brown sugar were recovered from a peddler in Ulidih. In addition, the drug abuse crackdown has been intensifying across the region in recent months.

The Jugsalai area has witnessed multiple criminal cases in recent times. In the past, large quantities of cough syrup and narcotic pills have been recovered in successive operations. Police have stated that the campaign against the full gang will continue.
