CHANDRAPURA – A homeguard jawan climbed a mobile tower in Bokaro’s Chandrapura on Tuesday, triggering panic and drawing a large crowd. He stayed atop the structure for more than two hours, demanding that he be allowed to marry his girlfriend.
The man, identified as Prem Kumar Koiri, a resident of Siddhi village and son of the late Alku Koiri, scaled the Jio tower near Budhubandh in Telo village. He works as a homeguard jawan himself. According to locals, he had been in a relationship with a young woman from Telo for the past four years.
Prem reportedly went out of his way to help the woman secure a job as a homeguard as well. However, her family had recently begun arranging her marriage elsewhere, a development that left him distressed. He climbed the tower in protest, demanding that his relationship be recognised through marriage.
The block development officer and the police station in-charge worked together to talk him down after a prolonged effort. Officials said bringing him down safely was their immediate priority, and an investigation into the matter is underway.
A large crowd, numbering in the thousands, gathered at the spot during the standoff, with many recording videos of the episode on their mobile phones. Police personnel repeatedly urged him to climb down, while he insisted that his marriage be arranged with the woman. He eventually relented after extended persuasion and was taken into police custody and brought to the station.
The incident in Chandrapura adds to a string of recent disturbances reported from the wider Bokaro district in the past few weeks. The state has also seen its homeguard recruitment process draw attention this year, while homeguard personnel have separately been at the centre of other recent incidents in the district. Bokaro police have meanwhile been engaged in several other operations across the district in the same period.
