Key Points:
- Shibu Soren to get Padma Bhushan posthumously in Delhi ceremony
- Wife Rupi Soren set to receive award from president
- Kalpana Soren expected to attend the investiture function
JAMSHEDPUR – Jharkhand Mukti Morcha founder Shibu Soren will be honoured posthumously with the Padma Bhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, at a ceremony in the national capital. Rupi Soren, his wife, will accept the award from the president on his behalf.
The investiture function is being held in New Delhi. Kalpana Soren, JMM legislator and wife of former chief minister Hemant Soren, is expected to be present at the ceremony.
Soren earned the moniker “Dishom Guru” for his decades of work in the formation of Jharkhand state and the fight for the rights of the tribal community. The central government had decided to confer the posthumous honour in recognition of his long political career and social contributions.
His passing left a significant void in Jharkhand’s political landscape, where he had built the JMM into a major force over several decades. Soren served multiple terms as Jharkhand’s chief minister and was a central figure in the decades-long agitation that eventually led to the state’s creation in 2000.
News of the honour has generated excitement among JMM workers and supporters across the state. Party leaders have described the moment as a matter of pride for the entire state. They have also said that Soren’s struggles, sacrifices and dedication toward tribal rights will continue to inspire future generations.
The award places Soren’s name more firmly among the country’s prominent leaders who made notable contributions to nation-building. JMM’s organisational strength in Seraikela and Gamharia has grown in recent months, even as the party navigates tensions within the broader alliance over recent Rajya Sabha elections in the state. Meanwhile, the nomination process for those seats had earlier drawn attention from multiple parties.
