JAMSHEDPUR – The East Singhbhum District Congress Committee organised a demonstration outside Tilak Library on Monday, condemning the first information report filed against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha.
District Congress president Parvinder Singh led the protest, which drew a large turnout of party workers and officials. Participants raised slogans against the central government before setting fire to its effigy.
Congress leaders alleged that the case against Rahul Gandhi stemmed from political malice. They said the ruling dispensation was attempting to muffle the voice of the opposition.
However, speakers stressed that a strong opposition remains essential to a functioning democracy. Meanwhile, they accused the central government of consistently targeting opposition leaders through such measures.
During the demonstration, Congress workers also raised a demand for a case against Bharatiya Janata Party workers in Uttarakhand. They argued that legal action ought to apply uniformly, rather than being influenced by political affiliation.
The Jamshedpur unit of the Congress organised the protest under directives from the state party committee. A significant number of district office-bearers and representatives from various departments and cells attended the gathering in Bistupur.
Besides voicing opposition to the FIR, protesters also registered disapproval of the central government’s broader policies and demanded impartial action. In addition, several participants drew comparisons with an earlier Congress protest against central legislation in the state.
Parvinder Singh said the party would continue to fight for democratic values and would resist any act of political vendetta through democratic means. “The party will always defend democratic principles and oppose any politically motivated action against its leaders,” he said. He also urged workers to strengthen the organisation and carry public issues to the people.
Moreover, the Bharatiya Janata Party has previously criticised Rahul Gandhi over his conduct as Leader of Opposition, while he has also faced sharp political attacks from the ruling party in recent weeks. Congress workers elsewhere in the state have similarly staged protest demonstrations in solidarity with the party leadership.
Besides Monday’s programme, the district unit had earlier organised events in Bistupur, including a trade fair event and functions marking Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
