Hemant Soren to Chair INDIA Alliance Meeting as NDA Shifts Legislators to Hotel
Key Points:
- NDA shifts MLAs to hotel to prevent cross-voting ahead of June 18 poll
- Congress leader Bandhu Tirki claims contact with three BJP legislators
- CM Hemant Soren to chair joint INDIA Alliance meeting on Tuesday evening
RANCHI — With Jharkhand’s Rajya Sabha election scheduled for June 18, both the ruling INDIA Alliance and the opposition NDA have moved sharply to consolidate their legislators, amid swirling fears of cross-voting and political defection.
The NDA has decided to shift its MLAs to a hotel as a precautionary measure. Sources said the legislators would remain under close watch until polling concludes. The move is being seen as an attempt to prevent any last-minute poaching by the ruling coalition.
Adding fuel to the political fire, Congress leader Bandhu Tirki claimed that he was in contact with three BJP MLAs. His statement immediately set off a fresh round of political speculation in Ranchi. However, the BJP dismissed the claim outright, calling it part of the opposition’s political strategy.
On the other side, the INDIA Alliance is equally active. Its constituent parties have been working to demonstrate unity and firm up their vote arithmetic. Chief Minister Hemant Soren is scheduled to chair a joint meeting of INDIA Alliance leaders and legislators on Tuesday evening. The meeting is expected to cover electoral strategy, legislator cohesion, and voting arrangements in detail.
Two Rajya Sabha seats in Jharkhand are up for election on June 18. The Jharkhand Assembly has 81 members, and the majority mark needed to win one seat works out to roughly 27 first-preference votes, making cross-voting a potentially decisive factor in a closely contested political contest.
Meanwhile, political activity across the state capital has intensified. Leaders from both rival camps have been holding back-channel consultations and keeping a close watch on legislators who may be susceptible to inducements. The practice of shifting MLAs to hotels ahead of key votes has been a recurring feature of Jharkhand’s legislative politics over the years.
