JAMSHEDPUR – A speeding Hyva truck rammed a motorcycle from behind near Govindpur on Monday afternoon, killing one rider on the spot and leaving his companion critically injured.

The accident occurred on the link road connecting Govindpur to National Highway-33. Police identified the deceased as 40-year-old Sukhdev Gorai, a resident of Ghorabandha. His companion, Kali Das Rajwar, was riding pillion at the time of the crash.

According to police accounts, the Hyva approached the motorcycle from behind at high speed before striking it without warning. Gorai fell onto the road and suffered fatal injuries in the impact. He died at the scene before any medical help could reach him.

Rajwar, who was riding behind Gorai, sustained severe injuries to his leg. Bystanders rushed to assist the injured man immediately after the collision. They also alerted the police about the accident.

Officers from the Govindpur police station reached the spot soon after receiving the information. Rajwar was then taken to Tata Motors Hospital for emergency treatment. He remains under medical care there.

The Hyva driver attempted to flee the scene with the vehicle following the collision. However, alert locals chased him down before he could travel far. Residents apprehended both the driver and the vehicle and handed them over to the police.

The area witnessed brief chaos in the aftermath of the crash, as a crowd of onlookers gathered along the road. Police later took the deceased’s body into custody and sent it for post-mortem examination. Officials also informed the victim’s family about the incident.

Govindpur police have taken the driver into custody and seized the truck involved in the crash. An investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched. Ghorabandha residents have demanded restrictions on the speed of heavy vehicles plying on the route following the death.

Monday’s crash adds to a recent run of road accidents reported across the Kolhan region. A similar collision was reported at Gopidih in Seraikela earlier this month, where a truck struck two motorcycles. Separately, a motorcycle accident near Bongada also claimed two lives this month. Officials have repeatedly flagged unchecked vehicle speeds on highway-linked stretches in the district as a recurring factor in such crashes. A separate Hyva accident was also reported in the neighboring Seraikela area on the same day.
