Tata Steel Celebrates World Environment Day with Plantation Drives and Water Body Rejuvenation

Over 1000 Saplings Planted, ISWP Water Body Rejuvenated to Hold 2 Million Litres

Tata Steel marked World Environment Day by organizing plantation drives, rejuvenating a water body, and engaging employees and students through various activities, reaffirming its commitment to a sustainable future.

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel commemorated World Environment Day with plantation drives and the rejuvenation of a water body, planting over 1000 saplings and creating a water holding capacity of 2 million litres.

The company planted saplings in various areas of Jamshedpur, including CRM Bara, Jamshedpur Works, near the nursing hostel at Tata Main Hospital, and Neem Bagh.

The rejuvenation of the 0.5-acre water body in the ISWP area has created a water holding capacity of two million litres, while an additional 0.25 acres is being developed as a recreational space with grass areas and tree saplings.

These efforts are part of Tata Steel’s sustainability journey, aimed at increasing green cover and creating more water holding capacity through the rejuvenation of previously neglected water bodies.

Engaging Employees and Students

In addition to the plantation drives, Tata Steel organized painting and elocution contests for school students on environmental themes.

The company also hosted online webinars, quizzes, emoji Pictionary, riddles, and word puzzles for its employees on the intranet.

These activities aimed to raise awareness and engage various stakeholders in the celebration of World Environment Day.

The theme for World Environment Day 2024 is ‘land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience’, aligning with the UN decade on ecosystem restoration from 2021 to 2030.

Tata Steel celebrated the day across its sites, including mines, plants, and marketing & sales office locations, involving multiple stakeholders in both online and on-ground activities.

Culmination Event and Awards

To commemorate the day and culminate the awareness-raising activities, an Environment Day function was organized at Beldih Club, Jamshedpur.

The event was graced by Chief Guest Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President Corporate Services, Tata Steel, and Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary, President, Tata Workers’ Union.

Keynote speakers Anand Malligavad, Lake Conservationist, and Professor N.H. Ravindranath, a retired professor from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, also addressed the gathering.

Winners from all the competitions were awarded during the function.

Tata Steel UISL’s Initiatives

Tata Steel UISL, a subsidiary of Tata Steel, also marked World Environment Day with a significant tree-planting event.

Over 2000 saplings of various species were planted at Neem Baug and CRM Bara, enhancing biodiversity and ecological resilience.

Ritu Raj Sinha, Managing Director of Tata Steel UISL, inaugurated the Upstream Recycling RRR Centre at Uliyan Flats, with enthusiastic participation from the local community.

These initiatives are part of Tata Steel UISL’s broader environmental agenda, which focuses on reducing carbon footprint, conserving natural resources, and promoting sustainable practices across all operations.
