Tight Contests Expected in Jorasanko and Chowringhee Seats
Key Points:
- Hindi-speaking voters emerge as key deciding factor

- BJP targets Congress-Left vote bank shift
KOLKATA – Electoral contests in Kolkata seats have intensified as Hindi-speaking candidates shape voter dynamics.
The political battle has sharpened in two major constituencies. These are Jorasanko and Chowringhee in Kolkata.
Meanwhile, Hindi-speaking voters continue to influence election outcomes significantly.
Trinamool Congress has won Jorasanko for three consecutive terms. However, the party now faces rising competition.
Moreover, the party replaced sitting MLA Vivek Gupta with councillor Vijay Upadhyay.
Analysts see this move as a response to performance concerns. Earlier, the seat was a Congress stronghold.
However, since 2001, Trinamool has retained control despite narrow victory margins.
Meanwhile, BJP has fielded councillor Vijay Ojha from Jorasanko. This marks his first Assembly contest.
In contrast, BJP had earlier nominated Meena Devi Purohit in 2021.
Ojha claims strong public support during campaigning. He also accused Trinamool of syndicate control and lawlessness.
Moreover, he said he continues public service work alongside campaigning.
On the other hand, Chowringhee remains a Trinamool stronghold. The party won decisively in 2021.
Naina Bandyopadhyay secured over 70,000 votes with a margin above 45,000.
Meanwhile, BJP has nominated Santosh Pathak from this seat. He is a four-time councillor.
Earlier, he contested on a Congress ticket in the previous election.
Political observers say BJP aims to break into Congress-Left vote banks. This strategy could reshape local dynamics.
Moreover, Pathak claims consistent engagement with residents during difficult times.
However, he also criticized the lack of visibility of elected representatives. He promised development-focused leadership.
