PAKUR – A 40-year-old man allegedly murdered his 65-year-old father with a sickle during a late-night drunken brawl at their home in Pakur’s Kittajhor locality, sending shock waves through the neighbourhood.
The incident took place late Tuesday night, when the accused, Diwakar Sardar, was drinking alcohol with his father Anup Sardar inside their house. Meanwhile, a heated argument broke out between the two. In a fit of rage, Diwakar struck Anup on the head with a sickle. The elderly man died on the spot.
Nagar Thana police arrived at the scene immediately after receiving information about the incident. The accused was arrested without delay. Moreover, the police took possession of the body and dispatched it for post-mortem examination. An investigation into the matter has been initiated.
Anup Sardar is survived by three children. His two daughters are already married. However, the accused Diwakar, who is the youngest son, himself has five children.
Varsha Sardar, daughter of the accused and granddaughter of the deceased, stated that her father had a long history of domestic violence. She alleged that he regularly assaulted family members under the influence of alcohol. In addition, she claimed that he had previously attempted to burn his wife alive. The family, she said, had been suffering from domestic abuse for a long time.
Nagar Thana Sub-Inspector Ashlok Kumar Pandey said that preliminary investigation suggests the case involves murder arising from a personal dispute. He added that interrogation of the accused is ongoing. Further legal action is being taken in the matter.
Pakur is located in Jharkhand, and incidents of alcohol-fuelled domestic violence have been a recurring concern in the state. The police in Jharkhand have been increasingly dealing with crimes rooted in alcohol abuse within families.
