Partnership with Montra Electric Aims to Prevent 64 Tonnes of CO2 Annually

Key Points:

  • First electric truck deployed at Coal Beneficiation Plant West Bokaro
  • Vehicle will prevent 64 tonnes CO2 emissions equivalent to 3000 trees
  • Extensive trials planned before phased adoption across operations

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel launched its first electric truck at West Bokaro Division’s Washery #3 Complex on January 21, 2026, marking a major step toward sustainable operations.

The Raw Material Division deployed the vehicle for the first time. It represents a partnership with Montra Electric and Tycoon Industries. The initiative supports Tata Steel’s goal to achieve Net Zero Emissions.

The company aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2045. The electric truck operates with zero emissions during usage. It will prevent 64 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

Moreover, this environmental benefit equals planting 3,000 trees per vehicle. The company plans extensive trials over coming months. However, performance evaluation will determine phased adoption across operational areas.

B V Sudhir serves as Chief of Coal Beneficiation. He leads operations at West Bokaro Division for Tata Steel. “This is a truly proud moment for our division,” he stated.

On the other hand, he emphasized sustainability integration into core operations. The initiative reduces carbon footprint across industrial activities. Besides, it supports India’s transition to low-carbon ecosystem.

Ranjan Kumar Sinha attended as Chief Procurement Officer of Tata Steel. Sanjay Rajoria participated as General Manager for Coal operations. Furthermore, Muzaffar Shah represented Tycoon Industries as Chairman.

Arvind Mohan Singh joined as National Head of Montra Electric. Mohan Mahto attended as President of Rashtriya Colliery Mazdoor Union. In addition, Dr. Yogendra Singh participated as Union Secretary.

Ashutosh Kumar Pandey attended as designate Chief of Coal Beneficiation. Mazhar Ali joined as Chief of Engineering and Services. Meanwhile, Shantanu Verma represented Chief Procurement Logistics at the launch.

Departmental heads and executives participated in the ceremony. Vendor partners and union members also attended the event. The gathering witnessed Tata Steel’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Electric trucks will replace traditional diesel-powered vehicles in operations. The transition significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions from transport. Moreover, electric vehicles decrease noise pollution at operational sites.

The company expects lower long-term operating costs from electrification. The initiative reinforces Tata Steel’s leadership in sustainable practices. However, heavy industry sector faces challenges in adopting green technologies at scale.

The West Bokaro facility operates coal beneficiation plants extensively. The division contributes significantly to raw material supply chains. Besides, it maintains strong partnerships with local communities.

The launch event highlighted collaboration between industry and technology providers. Tata Steel continues expanding its sustainability initiatives across divisions. Furthermore, the company evaluates additional green mobility solutions for future deployment.
