Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Mine Marks 43 Years of Innovation

Coal Beneficiation Group evolves from JRD Tata’s 1980 visit to cutting-edge technologies

Tata Steel’s West Bokaro mine celebrates 43 years of growth, from JRD Tata’s inaugural visit to modern coal beneficiation technologies.

RAMGARH – Tata Steel’s West Bokaro mine has transformed over 43 years, evolving from JRD Tata’s 1980 visit to a state-of-the-art coal beneficiation facility.

The journey of Tata Steel towards self-reliance in resource acquisition began early, with the company securing its own mines and reserves.

In 1977, Tata Steel initiated a significant expansion project at the West Bokaro colliery, involving open cast mining.

The project aimed to supply 0.72 million tonnes of clean coal annually to Jamshedpur Works.

On December 11, 1980, JRD Tata, then Chairman of Tata Sons, made his first visit to West Bokaro.

During his visit, JRD Tata inaugurated the first equipment in Washery-2, a 45-tonne vibrating screen, and unveiled a commemorative plaque.

He also inspected operations at Quarry A and encouraged employees to increase their efforts.

The Coal Beneficiation Group was formed by combining Washery and Logistics operations.

Over time, the group has consistently upgraded its technologies and facilities to meet the company’s evolving needs.

Currently, the Coal Beneficiation Group boasts a capacity of 7 million tonnes per annum of raw coal.

The material handling facility has modernized from a mono-cable ropeway to a long pipe conveyor system.

Technological advancements in coal beneficiation include an online clean coal ash analyser, scrolled evolve cyclone, vacuum belt filter, and reflux classifier.

The group achieved several pioneering milestones, including being the first in India to implement coal beneficiation in washeries in 1951.

It also owns the world’s largest vacuum belt filter in coal mining, significantly enhancing clean coal production.

Safety, health, and environmental responsibility are key pillars of the group’s operations.

The Coal Beneficiation Group of West Bokaro Division continues to uphold JRD Tata’s legacy and guiding principles, striving for excellence in its operations.
