Sonam Wangchuk’s Detention Sparks AISF Protest in Jamshedpur

Student Body Demands Immediate Release, Ladakh’s Sixth Schedule Status

Key Points:

  • AISF submits memorandum to Deputy Commissioner seeking Wangchuk’s release
  • Student federation condemns detention as attack on freedom of expression
  • Three-point charter demands judicial inquiry and constitutional protection for Ladakh

JAMSHEDPUR – The All India Students Federation’s Jharkhand chapter submitted a memorandum demanding environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk’s immediate release and intervention on Ladakh issues.

AISF state secretary Vikram Kumar led the delegation. They approached the Deputy Commissioner on Wednesday. The memorandum was addressed to the Governor through proper channels.

Kumar stated that authorities detained Wangchuk recently. The environmentalist has dedicated his life to climate justice. He works extensively on Himalayan ecological conservation. Moreover, he is recognized as an educator and social activist.

The detention represents an attack on free speech. It appears to suppress voices advocating for environmental protection. However, constitutional rights guarantee freedom of expression in India.

The student body strongly condemned the action. They termed it a violation of democratic traditions. In addition, such measures create an atmosphere of intolerance.

Wangchuk gained international recognition for his innovative educational methods. He founded the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh. Furthermore, his work inspired the character Phunsukh Wangdu in “3 Idiots.”

AISF presented three specific demands to the administration. First, they sought a high-level judicial inquiry. The probe should investigate incidents in Ladakh comprehensively.

Second, the federation demanded concrete steps for Ladakh’s inclusion. The region should receive Sixth Schedule constitutional protection. This would grant significant autonomy and safeguards.

Third, all cases against protestors must be withdrawn immediately. The student body termed these prosecutions false and motivated. Besides, such legal actions intimidate genuine activists.

The memorandum emphasized constitutional guarantees of fundamental rights. Democracy thrives on dissent and dialogue. On the other hand, arbitrary detentions undermine these principles.

AISF’s Jharkhand unit expressed solidarity with Ladakh’s demands. The region has witnessed sustained protests since 2019. Residents seek protection of their land and cultural identity.

Local activists echoed similar concerns about environmental protection. “Democratic rights must be respected,” a student leader noted. The organization plans further peaceful demonstrations across the state.

The administration has not responded to the memorandum yet. Meanwhile, civil society groups monitor the situation closely. Students across Jharkhand await concrete action on their demands.
