Union president hails ‘handsome’ agreement amid challenging market conditions
Key Points:
• Tata Workers Union negotiates favorable bonus for 2023-24 despite profit drop
• 27,454 employees to benefit from ₹303.13 crore bonus agreement
• Bonus formula set for revision next year based on company profits
JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel workers secure a ₹303.13 crore bonus for 2023-24, despite a 55% drop in company profits due to challenging market conditions.
Tata Workers Union President Sanjeev Choudhary returned to a warm reception at the union premises in Bistupur on Monday. Committee members and employees celebrated the successful bonus negotiation with traditional percussion instruments and firecrackers.
The agreement comes amid difficult circumstances for Tata Steel. A sudden decline in Chinese steel prices led to significant losses compared to the previous year.
Despite these challenges, the company has maintained its commitment to employee safety and benefits. "We’ve secured a respectable bonus considering the reduced profits," said a union representative.
The total bonus amount represents an increase of approximately ₹5 crore from last year’s agreement. This follows the merger of four companies with Tata Steel, expanding the workforce to 27,454 employees.
Union negotiations resulted in an additional ₹15.88 crore being added to the initial offer of ₹298.82 crore for 2022-23. "This acknowledges the hard work of our employees during tough times," Choudhary explained.
Employees have been urged to use the bonus wisely for their families’ future. "We’re hopeful market conditions will improve, allowing for a 20% bonus next year," an industry analyst commented.
This year’s distribution marks the final payout under the current bonus formula established in 2021. The company plans to revise the formula next year based on future profit projections.
The agreement has been met with satisfaction among workers. "It ensures we continue to receive a profit-based bonus despite financial hurdles," a Tata Steel employee stated.
