MGNREGA Workers Halt Operations in East Singhbhum, Demanding Permanency

Indefinite Strike Launched, Disrupting Rural Development Projects Across District

East Singhbhum MGNREGA employees initiate indefinite strike, seeking job permanency and accusing government of unfulfilled promises. Work halted district-wide.

JAMSHEDPUR – MGNREGA workers in East Singhbhum district have launched an indefinite strike, setting up demonstrations to demand permanent employment status and the fulfillment of government pledges.

The Jharkhand State MGNREGA Employees Union’s district unit began their protest on Tuesday, establishing a picket line in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Surai Hembram, the district president of the union, confirmed that the strike has brought MGNREGA operations to a standstill across East Singhbhum.

"Our dedication spans 17 years on mere honorariums," Hembram stated, highlighting the workers’ long-standing service.

The protesting employees are advocating for permanent positions, a demand they assert was previously endorsed by the Chief Minister during public engagements.

"This administration has offered nothing but empty promises throughout its tenure," remarked a disgruntled worker at the protest site.

The union has organized various demonstrations to draw attention to their cause, including:

– Surrounding the Rural Development Minister’s residence

– Marching to the state assembly

– Conducting a 100-kilometer foot journey

– Picketing the Chief Minister’s residence

Despite these efforts, workers claim their appeals continue to fall on deaf ears.

The union interprets the government’s lack of response as a sign of autocratic governance, strengthening their resolve to maintain the strike until their demands are addressed.

As the impasse persists, concerns are mounting about the potential long-term effects on rural development initiatives in the region.
