Dhalbhumgarh Airport Project Near Jamshedpur Faces Ongoing Delays

Environmental Concerns and Land Disputes Hinder Progress, Response to a Public Grievance Reveals Proposal Yet to Reach Central Ministry

The much-anticipated Dhalbhumgarh airport project near Jamshedpur continues to face persistent hurdles, with environmental concerns and land disputes leading to a prolonged delay spanning almost five years.

JAMSHEDPUR – Despite concerted efforts to push the project forward, the Dhalbhumgarh airport, envisioned to enhance air travel accessibility for residents of Jamshedpur and the surrounding Bengal-Odisha regions, remains mired in bureaucratic and environmental challenges.

The delay has prompted inquiries in Parliament, yet a resolution remains elusive.

Response to a Public Grievance Reveals Proposal Not Submitted for Clearances

An official response to a recent public grievance filed by Mr. Shashank Shekhar has shed light on the core issue impeding the project’s progress.

The response reveals that the proposal for the Dhalbhumgarh airport has not even reached the Central Forest and Environment Ministry for the necessary clearances.

Experts believe that once environmental approval is obtained, a significant portion of the deadlock will dissipate, paving the way for the project to move forward.

Shashank Shekhar Swain, a Youtuber and a Rail, Aviation and Space Enthusiast, who received the response for his public grievance, told the Town Post: “The State Government is delaying in forwarding the papers related to Dhalbhumgarh Airport to the central government due to which the Project is not receiving the Forest Clearance and environment Clearance. Only after the clearance in both of them, the construction of the airport can start. In my view, the State Government is responsible for the delay.”

Environmental Concerns and Elephant Corridor

The impasse surrounding the Dhalbhumgarh airport has largely revolved around concerns regarding environmental clearances and the existence of an elephant corridor in the proposed area.

Despite attempts to address these issues, including a directive to conduct a fresh Gram Sabha, progress has been hindered by a bureaucratic quagmire between the Gram Sabha and the state government.

The environmental concerns and the presence of an elephant corridor have been the primary stumbling blocks for the airport project,” stated an official source familiar with the matter. “We are working towards finding a solution that addresses these issues while ensuring the project’s viability.”

Amidst the ongoing challenges, a glimmer of hope has emerged with the recent removal of land-related hurdles.

The Principal Chief Forest Conservator of Jharkhand has given the green light for airport construction and forwarded the file to the Forest Environment and Climate Change Department.

This development has injected a sense of optimism among stakeholders, who believe that the project may finally gain momentum once the environmental clearances are obtained.

Enhancing Regional Air Connectivity

The Dhalbhumgarh airport, once operational, is expected to significantly enhance air travel accessibility for residents of Jamshedpur, located approximately 55 km away.

Moreover, it will cater to passengers from the Bengal-Odisha regions, eliminating the need for them to travel to Ranchi or Kolkata for air travel.

The airport is seen as a crucial step towards bridging the gap in regional air connectivity and fostering economic growth in the area.

MoU Signed in 2019, Challenges Persist

The Dhalbhumgarh airport project initially gained traction in 2019 when a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Jharkhand government and the Airport Authority of India.

However, challenges related to land acquisition and environmental concerns have persistently hindered progress since then.

Despite the setbacks, stakeholders remain hopeful that with concerted efforts and administrative cooperation, the long-awaited Dhalbhumgarh airport will soon become a reality, unlocking new opportunities for the region.
