Chandil Farmers Triumph in Pearl Cultivation; Seek Govt Support for Marketing

Pearl Farming Success in Chandil Reservoir; Farmers Eye Market Expansion

Farmers in Chandil reservoir, Kharsawan district, have successfully cultivated pearls, presenting new potential to the government and administration, now seeking support in branding and marketing.

JAMSHEDPUR – Farmers in Seraikela’s Chandil reservoir, part of the Swarnarekha Multipurpose Project, have achieved remarkable success in pearl farming.

This success comes from the collective efforts of displaced villagers from 116 villages who formed the Matsyajeevi Swavalamban Samiti.

Initially focusing on fish production through cage culture, these farmers ventured into pearl farming and found success on their first try.

The current challenge for these farmers is the marketing and branding of their harvested pearls.

Jagdish Singh Sardar, a displaced farmer and member of the Matsyajeevi Cooperative Society, expressed optimism about Chandil Reservoir becoming a significant pearl production hub.

The reservoir has become increasingly popular among tourists for boating and observing fish production.

With the addition of pearl farming, there’s potential for new employment opportunities for local farmers.

However, due to the absence of proper marketing channels, farmers are currently selling their pearls directly to tourists visiting the reservoir.

The farmers urgently require governmental support and access to broader markets to fully capitalize on their pearl production.

Providing a market for these pearls could significantly improve the livelihoods of farmers displaced by the Chandil Dam, and address the issues of unemployment and migration in the region.

This initiative highlights the potential for new agricultural practices to create sustainable economic growth and the need for government intervention to maximize their impact.
