Tata Steel Invests £10 Million in Sustainable Design and Manufacturing Centre

Tata Steel and Imperial College London have signed an MoU to establish a Centre for Innovation in Sustainable Design and Manufacturing, marking a significant commitment to advancing sustainable technology in London.

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel has partnered with Imperial College London to create a Centre for Innovation in Sustainable Design and Manufacturing, with an investment of £10 million over four years.

This Centre aims to accelerate technology development in key strategic areas, enhancing the industry-academia collaborative ecosystem.

T. V. Narendran, CEO & MD of Tata Steel, emphasized the Centre’s role in building strong industry-academia partnerships for technological advancement and strategic benefits.

Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee, Vice President of Technology and R&D at Tata Steel, highlighted the Centre’s focus on sustainable solutions embedded in the production process and materials design.

The Centre will initially focus on manufacturing for the future economy, smart manufacturing, sustainable multi-material joining technologies, and net-zero construction technologies.

It aims to work on sustainable material manufacturing, focusing on designing and developing downstream processes with low carbon, energy, and cost footprints.

Professor Mary Ryan, Vice-Provost at Imperial College London and co-chair of the Centre’s Governing Council, outlined the Centre’s commitment to reducing environmental impacts in steel production and key sectors using steel, like the clean energy sector.

The collaboration between Tata Steel and Imperial College London is set to leverage their combined expertise to prioritize systematic transformation of industrial systems.

This initiative is part of Tata Steel’s broader endeavor to create a knowledge-intensive organization, emphasizing technology leadership and sustainable business growth.

The Centre at Imperial College London represents a significant step towards creating a high-tech and economically successful steel industry in the UK and globally.
