Partnership to Establish Innovation Centre Focused on Decarbonisation and Advanced Manufacturing Technologies

Tata Steel and Monash University sign MoU to set up an Innovation Centre addressing global challenges like decarbonisation and advanced manufacturing technologies.

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel has partnered with Monash University to establish a Centre for Innovation on Environment and Intelligent Manufacturing.

The collaboration aims to tackle global challenges such as decarbonisation and resource recovery.

It also focuses on advanced, additive, and data-driven manufacturing technologies.

Major R&D Partnership

Tata Steel’s first significant research and development partnership with an Australian institution is marked by this MoU.

This venture will provide numerous educational and professional opportunities, enhancing the exchange of knowledge and talent between India and Australia.

On a broader scale, it aims to strengthen the ties between the Australian innovation ecosystem and India.

T. V. Narendran, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel, highlighted the partnership’s significance.

“India’s influence in the global steel industry is growing not just in volume and quality but also in sustainable practices,” Narendran stated.

He emphasized Tata Steel’s commitment to leading sustainable manufacturing and building a comprehensive ecosystem involving academia and startups.

Our agreement with Monash University, known for its excellence in material science, will foster technological advancements and open new business opportunities,” he added.

Enhancing Material Science Research

Professor Doron Ben-Meir, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Monash University, expressed excitement about the collaboration.

Partnering with Tata Steel is a significant step towards advancing material science and chemical process research,” Ben-Meir noted.

He stressed the importance of industry-facing research and scaling up innovations.

Professor Mainak Majumder, Director of the ARC Research Hub for Advanced Manufacturing with 2D Materials, remarked on the strategic alignment of the Centre for Innovation with their mission.

He stated, “We strive to create a global impact from Australian-born science and technology.”

Decarbonisation Efforts and Future Plans

Tata Steel’s journey towards decarbonisation involves continuous research, technological innovation, and collaborations with academia, startups, and reputable organizations.

Recently, Tata Steel signed MoUs with Imperial College London and The Henry Royce Institute to establish Centres of Innovation in the UK.

These initiatives focus on sustainable design, manufacturing, and advanced materials.

The collaboration with Monash University is another step forward in Tata Steel’s commitment to sustainability and technological advancement.
