2nd wave is receding fast, TMH now preparing for 3rd wave: Dr Rajan Chaudhry

Jamshedpur: The second wave of Covid-19 in Jamshedpur is receding fast. The number of new admissions of corona patients too is declining. Only 15 new positive patients were admitted in TMH during one week. However, TMH remains vigilant and is preparing for meeting the challenges likely to be brought in by a possible third wave of the pandemic.

Dr. Rajan Chaudhry, Advisor to TMH and former GM of Tata Steel Medical Services today said in a weekly press conference that the positivity rate in TMH has come down to 2.06, while only 15 positive patients were admitted in last one week.

He said that only one patient is being treated in CCU, while the number of corona positive patients in wards is only 11. The recovery rate too has gone up to 84.09, he said.

However, he added, 3 deaths have been recorded in TMH due to corona. This number is, however, less than 7 deaths that took place previous week. So, even deaths have come down bringing a huge relief and an indication that the second wave might be on its way out.

However, TMH is already preparing for a possible 3rd wave. Number of beds are being increased and manpower is being increased. More resources are being arranged to fight the possible 3rd wave effectively, he said.

He said that if vaccination is speeded up, the third wave can be managed in a better way. He expressed apprehension that the 3rd wave may be experienced any time between October and December.

He said that if people stop complying with social distancing norms, 3rd wave may arrive sooner than expected.

Dr. Chaudhry said that 100 samples were sent to Odisha for genome sequencing study from TMH and out of these 47 samples had delta variant. Delta variant is the reason for second wave taking a heavy toll.

He said that TMH had recorded 14 patients of Mucormycosis. Out of these 6 have died, 3 got discharged, one was cured and 4 are being treated.

Dr. Chaudhry said that vaccination remains the mainstay of the fight against corona and it is possible that one would need to be vaccinated every year.

He said that the OPD services have been restored in TMH and consultation over telephone is also being done.
