Police rush to Balimahari after conversion tip, detain six
KODERMA – Police in Koderma district swiftly reached Balimahari area on Friday after receiving information about an alleged religious conversion attempt underway in the locality. Acting on the tip, officers detained nearly half a dozen people from the spot and have begun questioning them.
A crowd of local residents gathered in the area soon after word of the alleged activity spread. Police moved to manage the gathering and maintained law and order in the locality while the inquiry proceeded.
According to officials, the department had received specific information that a group of people in Balimahari were allegedly carrying out activities linked to religious conversion. Given the sensitivity of the tip, a police team was dispatched to the spot without delay.
Officers questioned people present at the location and examined relevant documents found there. Following the on-site checks, around half a dozen individuals were taken into custody and brought to the police station, where questioning is continuing.
Police said the case is being examined from every angle. Officials added that the veracity of the conversion claim, and whether any law has been violated, will become clear only once the investigation concludes.
Authorities said that if the inquiry reveals anyone’s involvement in unlawful conversion activity, further action will follow under the relevant legal provisions. The administration in Koderma has in the past dealt with similarly sensitive matters; an anti-corruption case earlier this year had also drawn local attention to the district’s police functioning.
Police have appealed to residents not to give credence to unverified rumours and to maintain peace and communal harmony in the area. A similar appeal followed a separate rumour-driven incident in Bokaro earlier this year, where misinformation triggered an attack on a group of sadhus.
The investigation into the Balimahari matter remains ongoing. Police reiterated that subsequent steps will be taken strictly on the basis of facts established during the probe, rather than on unverified claims doing the rounds locally. Meanwhile, the broader district administration continues to monitor sensitive law and order situations across Jharkhand, where local grievances have periodically required swift official response.
