Key Points:
- Two of five bathers swept away in Ganga near Buxar still missing

- Three of the five managed to reach the riverbank safely
BUXAR – Two young men remained untraced on Wednesday evening after five friends were swept away while bathing in the Ganga river near the Post Office Ghat in the Baad subdivision of Buxar district, Bihar.
The five youths, all residents close to Baad police station and belonging to the Malik community, had gone to the ghat together for an evening bath in the river. However, the strong current pulled all five into deeper water during the bath.
Bystanders managed to pull one of the youths out of the river. Two others also swam to safety on their own after struggling against the current.
Vikas and Rohit, however, were dragged further away by the fast-flowing water. Onlookers attempted a rescue but could not bring the two out of the river.
SDPO Ramkrishna rushed to the spot along with his force as soon as he received information about the incident. Divers have since joined the search operation along the riverbank.
Meanwhile, the search for the two missing youths was continuing into the evening, according to officials at the scene. Local residents gathered near the ghat as the rescue effort progressed.
The Ganga river, known locally for its strong currents at several ghats in Bihar, has previously been the site of similar drowning cases during bathing hours. Authorities in Buxar district often deploy divers and disaster response teams in such situations along the river’s banks.
A similar drowning case was reported earlier this year when two students drowned while retrieving a cricket ball from a river in a river accident. In another incident, a youth from Sonari went missing after drowning in the Swarnarekha near Chandil. Bodies pulled from rivers after extended searches have also been reported in cases such as the recovery of a youth’s body from the Swarnarekha. NDRF teams have been called in for similar operations, as seen when a search operation was launched after a body was found in the Swarnarekha. Earlier this year, a boat capsize in the Ganga at Patna also left three killed and four missing. In Muzaffarpur, two youths recently drowned in a pond, with one of them rescued.
