JAMSHEDPUR – An unidentified body was recovered from a pond in Parsudih police station area on Friday morning, triggering panic in the locality.
The body was found floating in Abhinash pond, located in Haludbani Para Tola. A large crowd gathered near the pond soon after news of the discovery spread.
Parsudih police reached the spot upon being informed. Officers took custody of the body and sent it for a postmortem examination.
According to local residents, some women from Chutki Tola in Haludbani had gone to the pond for their routine morning bath. They spotted the body floating in the water during this time.
The women raised an alarm after noticing the corpse. A large number of villagers subsequently rushed to the spot.
Villagers immediately informed Parsudih police about the discovery. However, no one has yet come forward to identify the deceased.
Eyewitnesses said the body appeared to be two to three days old based on its condition. A foul smell was also emanating from the corpse.
This led to speculation that the body had been in the water for a considerable period. Meanwhile, no clear information regarding the age or identity of the deceased has emerged so far.
Police completed the inquest procedures after pulling the body out of the pond. The remains were then sent to MGM Medical College Hospital for postmortem.
Officers are questioning people in the surrounding area in an attempt to establish the identity of the deceased. “The real cause of death will only be revealed once the postmortem report is received,” a Parsudih police source said.
Police said they are examining the case from every angle. Besides this, the incident has left Haludbani and nearby areas gripped by fear and discussion.
The discovery comes against a backdrop of several similar incidents reported across the district in recent months. In May, an unidentified body was found in the Swarnarekha river near Mango. A similar case was also reported from the Kharkai river.
On the other hand, an unidentified body had also been recovered near a brick kiln in Seraikela. In a separate incident, the body of a youth had earlier been sent for postmortem after recovery from the Swarnarekha river.
Parsudih has reported several unrelated incidents in recent weeks as well. A worker heading to Tata Motors was killed in a road accident in the area. In addition, a man was recently held after a snatching attempt in Parsudih.
