Illegal Sand Truck Caught Crossing Border From Odisha

BAHARAGORA – Police seized a hyva truck carrying illegal sand on National Highway-49 near Kaliadinga Chowk in the early hours of Tuesday, acting on a tip-off about ongoing smuggling in the area.
The vehicle, bearing registration number WB 29C 3639, was coming from Jamsola in Odisha when officers intercepted it. According to police, the truck was caught red-handed just as it crossed the interstate border into Jharkhand.
Officers had received information that mining mafia operators were smuggling sand without any valid documentation. Acting on the tip, a police team swiftly set up a blockade and halted the vehicle on the spot.
The driver was questioned, and his documents were examined at the checkpoint. However, he failed to produce satisfactory paperwork to justify the cargo. As a result, police seized the vehicle immediately.
Meanwhile, the Baharagora police, along with the mining department, have since begun fast-tracking legal proceedings against those involved. Officials said an advance first information report is also being registered in connection with the seizure.
The action follows a pattern of enforcement drives along the Odisha-Jharkhand border. In 2023, police had carried out a similar operation, seizing 7,300 cft of illegally mined sand from the same belt near Baharagora.
On the other hand, enforcement teams elsewhere in the region have also intensified action against illicit trade this month. In Ghatshila, police recently carried out a crackdown on drug smuggling, arresting three people with cannabis and brown sugar. Similarly, in Ranchi, a woman was held with brown sugar worth Rs 5 lakh earlier this month.
Besides drug seizures, police in Seraikela also acted against theft rackets recently, having recovered stolen jewelry worth Rs 5 lakh and arrested four accused. However, enforcement in the region has not been free of controversy, with a Chaibasa station officer recently caught red-handed demanding a bribe by the Anti-Corruption Bureau, and a police station in-charge in Bandgaon separately held for accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.
