JAMSHEDPUR – Five motorcycles were reduced to ash near the CGPC office in Sakchi on Saturday, as a fire of undetermined origin swept through the area.
The bikes belonged to contract workers employed at Tata Steel. They had parked their vehicles near the CGPC office before heading inside for their shift.
Meanwhile, a probable cause is being examined by investigators. Someone is suspected to have smoked a cigarette and discarded it into nearby bushes. The resulting bush fire is believed to have engulfed the parked bikes.
The owners of four bikes have been identified. They are Sharat Chandra Mahato, Satish Kumar, B. Sudhakar Rao, and Rajesh Kumar. However, the fifth bike owner’s identity could not be ascertained.
The incident triggered a wave of panic in the surrounding area. On receiving information, a fire brigade vehicle rushed to the spot. With assistance from local residents, the fire was brought under control.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated. On the other hand, the police have launched a full probe into the matter. The fire incident near the CGPC office falls under the jurisdiction of Sakchi police station in Jamshedpur.
In similar past incidents, vehicles have caught fire at various spots across the city, including near Tatanagar railway station. Authorities are yet to determine whether negligence or arson was the cause.
