CM Soren pledges free electricity, addresses socio-economic challenges
Key Points:
- Free electricity up to 200 units for poor families announced.
- Soren criticizes BJP’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ agenda.
- CM emphasizes rural economy and industrial challenges in Jharkhand.
RANCHI – Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, addressing the Assembly on Thursday, emphasized that the coalition government formed in 2019 has laid a strong foundation for development, with tangible progress being the primary goal.
Responding to the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s address, Soren stressed the government’s vision to ensure visible progress in infrastructure, tourism, and employment generation. “Our priority is to ensure visible development on the ground, not just in words,” he remarked, reiterating his focus on inclusive governance.
Emphasis on Rural Economy and Socio-economic Challenges
Soren underscored the importance of improving the rural economy as the backbone of all-round development. “Our government is not run from the secretariat alone; it is driven by the villages,” he said. He acknowledged Jharkhand’s historical struggles and paid tribute to those who fought for the state’s formation.
Reflecting on the state’s challenges since its creation, the CM criticized the neglect and poverty that plagued Jharkhand before 2019. “Farmers committed suicides, and people died with ration cards in their hands,” he remarked, calling for transformative changes.
Addressing migration and displacement issues, Soren pointed out that despite housing major industries like Bokaro Steel Plant and HEC in Ranchi, Jharkhand remains backward. He highlighted the government’s progressive labour laws and initiatives to protect the welfare of workers.
Free Electricity for Poor Families
In a significant announcement, Hemant Soren declared that poor families in Jharkhand will receive free electricity. The government will provide free electricity up to 200 units. Those consuming between 200 and 400 units will receive a subsidy of ₹2.05 per unit, while consumers using over 400 units will be charged ₹6.65 per unit.
“Our government is committed to ensuring relief for the poor while accelerating progress,” Soren added.
Criticism of BJP’s ‘One Nation, One Election’
On the same day, CM Soren criticized the BJP-led NDA’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ agenda, calling it the ruling party’s strategy. “They have the majority and can take any decision, but its implications need to be seen,” Soren told reporters at the Assembly premises.
He noted that simultaneous elections were held when India became independent but emphasized that the political agenda of the BJP differs from that of the state government. “This is their agenda. They will work on their agenda, and we will work on ours,” Soren stated.
The Union Cabinet recently approved draft bills for implementing simultaneous elections, with legislation expected in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
Motion Passed Amid Appeals for Cooperation
Concluding his address, Soren urged the Opposition to support the state’s development goals, stating, “Every day marks a new chapter in our progress. We have begun the journey, and we will accelerate it.”
The Assembly passed the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s address with a majority following the Chief Minister’s speech.
