MEDININAGAR – An 18-year-old worker, Basant Yadav, tragically died after being run over by a tractor wheel in Palamu’s Nawabazar area while being transported to a hospital in Ranchi.
The incident occurred on Monday evening when Basant and the tractor driver, Vijay Singh, were returning after delivering bricks to Kajru Kala village. Both reportedly consumed alcohol during the return journey. Near Arar and Khodhi villages, Basant fell off the moving tractor, and one of its wheels ran over him, causing severe injuries.
Tractor and brick kiln owner Ashok Kumar Mehta arranged initial treatment at a private hospital in Nawabazar. Basant was later referred to Medinirai Medical College and Hospital and subsequently to RIMS in Ranchi due to his worsening condition. He succumbed to his injuries en route to Ranchi.
When the body reached Basant’s village in Pipra, grief-stricken family members halted the police’s attempt to take the body for postmortem.
They demanded ₹5 lakh in compensation from the brick kiln owner. After discussions with Ashok Kumar Mehta, the family allowed the postmortem to proceed.
Nawabazar Police Station in-charge Chintu Kumar confirmed that the case is under thorough investigation. "We are examining all aspects of the incident and will take necessary action," he said.
