2 Lakh Medical, Sales Representatives Join Forces in Nationwide Strike
JAMSHEDPUR – In a significant development, 200,000 medical and sales representatives, including those from Jamshedpur, from across the country cametogether under the Federation of Medical and Nets Representatives Association of India (FMRAI) to observe a strike in support of their demands.
This unification was prompted by the Bihar Jharkhand Sales Representatives Union (BSSRU) at the state level, leading to a complete halt of sales promotion activities in Jharkhand.
On Wednesday, 750 sales promotion representatives of the district joined the ongoing strike, amplifying their voices as they gathered near the Deputy Commissioner’s office. With a commitment to democratic principles, these representatives expressed their demands with conviction and determination.
Leaders from various trade unions and fraternal organizations, spanning sectors such as banking, insurance, healthcare, and railways, assembled at the protest site to show their unwavering support, delivering fervent speeches in solidarity with the cause.
Notable figures, including Vishwajit Dev, the General Secretary of the CITU Jharkhand State Committee, and KK Tripathi, a prominent trade union leader, addressed the striking workers. Kam K D Pratap and Kam Subroto Biswas, esteemed national executive members of the organization, were recognized for their instrumental role in orchestrating the successful strike.
The Secretary of the BSSR Union Jamshedpur unit, Binay Kumar, presented a comprehensive list of eight demands to the government and employers. Kumar emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues and hinted at the possibility of a widespread movement in the near future.
Among the demands, the Sales Promotion Employees (Conditions of Services) Act, 1976, that pertains to medical and sales representatives, must be enforced. In addition, the striking representatives are calling for a development of a comprehensive statutory work manual designed specifically for their roles.
The FM RAAI has been actively engaging with officials at all levels of the Ministry of Labor and Employment and the Department of Labor and Employment, consistently highlighting the grievances faced by medical and sales representatives.
One of the key issues brought to attention is the exploitative labor practices imposed by employers. Medical and sales representatives often face mistreatment and are subjected to unfair working conditions. Advocates argue that under the right to work, it is essential to eliminate all restrictions on their entry into workplaces, government hospitals, and institutions to ensure unhindered access and promote a more inclusive healthcare system.
To alleviate the financial burden on patients and healthcare providers, there is a growing demand for a reduction in the prices of medicines and medical equipment. Proponents propose the complete abolition of tax provisions on essential healthcare resources. The high cost of medicines and medical equipment poses significant challenges, hindering access to vital treatments and impacting the delivery of quality care. Critics, however, caution that such measures may have potential repercussions.
Another crucial aspect raised is the need for a "Data Privacy Law" within the workplace, particularly for medical and sales representatives. Employers are urged to put an end to all forms of harassment and blackmail in sales.
The FMRAI’s nationwide strike has garnered significant attention and support, highlighting the plight of medical and sales representatives. As the strike continues, all eyes are on the government and employers to take immediate action and address these long-standing issues to ensure fair treatment and improved working conditions for these essential workers.
