Jamshedpur floods: Water level recedes as rain gods relent, apprehension of diseases takes over

Apprehensions of diseases spreading in affected areas take over now

Jamshedpur: The rain gods relented at around 1.30 a.m. at night as the drizzle came to a stop and the continuous rise in the water level stopped. The threat level went down a notch around 3.30 a.m. and water level started falling as the minutes passed.

Residents of many residential areas in Jugsalai, Bagbera, Kadma and Shashtri Nagar remained concerned and watchful.

Water had reached even those areas in Jugsalai and Bagbera that had remained untouched during the last several years.

People from the areas adjoining the river had moved by Saturday evening to safer areas. Several houses in River View Colony and Bagbera Basti, Baroda Ghat area had to be vacated as the residents shifted to safer areas.

The cattle owners and dairy owners were forced to move their cattle to higher areas.

Residents of low-lying areas remained concerned and watchful throughout the night.

However, as the rains stopped and the skies started clearing up, fears of a possible flood went down.

By 6 a.m., the skies had virtually cleared up and by 8 a.m. the sun was shining cheerfully.

Rain has stopped and there are no clouds in the skies.

Water is still receding, but the inundation still continues in several low lying areas. It may take hours before the water completely recedes.

With the water receding, fears of disease spreading in the low-lying areas are real.

Earlier too diseases like diarrhea had spread in several areas of Bagbera and Jugsalai once the water had receded.

The DC Vijaya Jadhav had said yesterday that steps would be taken to ensure that no diseases spread in the low-lying areas as the water recedes.

On Saturday, she had visited several low-lying areas and had promised all possible help to the affected people.
