Chanu Saikhom Mirabai wins silver in weightlifting, opens tally for India

Desk: Chanu Saikhom Mirabai has earned the first medal for India in the Women’s 49 kg weightlifting event in Tokyo Olympics 2020. And it is silver.

She had to face a tough battle in the event and finished second. With this India has opened its tally.

Hou Zhuhui of China won the gold in the event.

The weightlifter Mirabai Chanu hails from Manipur.

The Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has congratulated her.

In a tweet he said: “You have made the country proud today.”

Kiren Rijiju, the minister of law and justice and a member of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh also expressed joy at her feat.

In his comment, the Home Minister Amit Shah said: So proud of

@mirabaichanu for clinching the silver medal in the Women’s 49kg Weightlifting category at the #OlympicGames. Wishing you all the very best for your future endeavours.”

Accolades are coming from all coroners as everyone is praising her perseverance.
