44-year-old woman contract worker dies inside Tata Steel plant

No accident, company terms it likely ‘medical case’, post mortem report awaited

Jamshedpur: A woman contract worker, 44, identified as Bebi Mandal, died Saturday after losing consciousness due to unknown reasons. She was given first aid, but the doctors could not track her heart beat. She was rushed to TMH, but was declared brought dead.

In a statement, Tata Steel said: “At around 11:55 am today, Bebi Mandal, aged around 44 years and employed as a contractual worker by Deep Transport Company, a sub-contractor of Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure Services Ltd., became unconscious in front of her fellow workers near the loco repair shop inside the Jamshedpur Steel Works during the D’ shift, where she was deployed for work.

The statement further said: “She was immediately brought to the First Aid Station by her colleagues. Doctors attending on her were unable to track her heart beat. She was rushed to Tata Main Hospital where she was declared brought dead at around 12:30 p.m.”

The statement added: “She did not meet with any accident while inside the plant and the cause of death is stated to be a “medical case”. The body of the deceased has been sent for post mortem and the exact cause of death will be known after the post mortem report comes in. As a responsible corporate, Tata Steel is committed to the safety and well-being of all its stakeholders.”
