SERAIKELA – Two teenagers drowned while bathing in the Asangi Check Dam under RIT police station limits on Saturday, and while one body has been recovered, a search is continuing for the second boy.
The incident occurred in the RIT police station area of Seraikela. Two teenagers had gone to bathe in the check dam.
They ventured into deep water during the swim. Both boys drowned as a result, according to police.
News of the accident spread quickly, causing panic in the locality. Local residents immediately alerted the police.
RIT police personnel reached the spot soon after. They launched a rescue operation with the help of local divers.
The search continued for an extended period. Eventually, divers managed to recover the body of one teenager.
The deceased has been identified as Love Kumar, a resident of Adityapur’s S-Type locality. Meanwhile, the second teenager remains missing.
He has been identified as Utsav Kumar, aged 15. He belongs to Kalpanapuri in Adityapur.
Divers and police teams were still searching for him at the time this report was filed. However, the operation had not located him so far.
Family members of both boys rushed to the check dam after hearing the news. They broke down in grief at the site.
The atmosphere at the spot turned somber following their arrival. Relatives repeatedly questioned how the teenagers had reached such a distant location.
Meanwhile, a large crowd of local residents also gathered near the dam. Police had to manage the crowd while continuing the search.
Local divers, alongside police personnel, kept combing the deeper parts of the water body. The effort remained focused on tracing the missing teenager.
“Our immediate focus is on completing the rescue operation,” a police official said. A detailed investigation will follow once the search concludes, the official added.
According to preliminary information, both teenagers drowned after moving into deep water while bathing. Police cited this as the likely cause of the accident.
Besides RIT police station, Seraikela-Kharsawan district has recorded several similar drowning cases this year. In June, a teenager drowned in a well while bathing in Manoharpur.
In another case, a youth went missing after drowning in the Swarnarekha river near Chandil. Similarly, two children drowned while retrieving a cricket ball from a river in May.
In April, a student drowned while bathing at Gamharia barrage. In March, a man drowned at Dimna Lake, and his body remained unidentified.
However, authorities have also stepped up preparedness measures in the region. Earlier in June, the NDRF conducted rescue training at Dimna Lake for local students.
In a separate case last December, a body was recovered from a riverbank in Seraikela district. Police have appealed to residents to avoid bathing in check dams, rivers and reservoirs during the monsoon season.
