Himanshu Singh’s Death, Truck Driver Attack Spark Protests in Jamshedpur; Need for police to tighten security
Jamshedpur police and administration have a mammoth challenge ahead of them – that of winning the confidence of people.
A series of crimes in the recent days and the general uptick in the number of incidents have exposed the chinks in the police armour.
The police need to show that they mean business and that the criminals cannot dominate the streets of Jamshedpur.
The most important thing is to keep a close watch on all the pubs and hotels serving alcohol and providing dance facilities.
These have become a den of antisocials.
The closure time must be enforced on such pubs and entry must be monitored strictly by the clubs and pubs.
In a fresh incident that has further shaken public confidence, a youth identified as Himanshu Singh succumbed to stab injuries after being attacked in Jamshedpur.
The incident has triggered widespread anger among his friends and family members, who held a road blockade in protest demanding swift action against the culprits.
The protesters raised slogans against the administration and police, alleging negligence and a failure to ensure law and order in the area.
Family members of Himanshu Singh demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and stricter measures to curb the rising crime graph in Jamshedpur.
The road blockade caused traffic disruption for several hours before police intervened and assured the protesters of a thorough investigation.
This incident has added urgency to the long-standing demand for stronger policing and stricter enforcement of rules governing pubs and hotels in the city.
In yet another incident that has rattled the city, a truck driver was attacked and an attempt was made to rob him near the TRF Company in the Burmamines police station area, though the assailants fled after the driver resisted.
The injured driver has been identified as Jai Prakash Rajak, a resident of Birgram in West Bengal, who drives a truck for Munna Jha Transport.
The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, between around 1:30 and 2 am, when the driver was present near his truck.
During this time, three youths arrived there in a vehicle, armed with weapons such as choppers and pistols.
The miscreants demanded the driver’s mobile phone and cash, but the driver resisted the robbery attempt.
Following this, the attackers launched a brutal assault with sharp weapons, leaving the driver critically injured.
Despite being severely wounded, he did not lose courage and somehow managed to flee from the spot.
Meanwhile, Burmamines police, who were on patrol, spotted him and immediately rushed him to Sadar Hospital.
Doctors administered first aid, and the driver’s condition is currently stated to be out of danger.
On the other hand, upon receiving information about the incident, a large number of truck drivers reached the police station, and representatives of the driver union submitted a memorandum to the police.
The union demanded the swift arrest of the accused and also raised demands for increased police patrolling at night.
In addition, demands were made to strengthen security in sensitive areas, with emphasis on ensuring the safety of truck drivers.
At present, Burmamines police are investigating the case, and CCTV footage from the surrounding areas is being examined.
The police have stated that the accused are being identified and claimed that an arrest would be made soon.
