JAMSHEDPUR – An unidentified thief stole a two-tola gold chain from a woman devotee during the ongoing Laxmi Narayan Mahayagya at Cable Basti in the Golmuri police station area on Sunday, triggering panic among hundreds of worshippers gathered at the religious event.

The victim, Indu Singh, a resident of Cable Town in Jamshedpur, had arrived at the yagna venue on Sunday morning for prayers and rituals. The chain went missing while she was taking rounds of the yagnashala. She realised the theft only when she noticed her neck was bare.

The incident spread panic at the venue almost immediately. Indu Singh promptly informed both the organising committee and local police. The mahayagya had been attracting a large number of devotees, and inadequate security arrangements are believed to have made the theft possible.

The incident has raised serious questions about the organisers’ security preparations. Concerns are being expressed about the absence of adequate surveillance, CCTV coverage, and sufficient deployment of security personnel at such crowded religious gatherings.

Meanwhile, police in Jamshedpur have launched an investigation into the matter. CCTV footage from cameras installed in the vicinity of the mahayagya venue is being reviewed. The aim is to identify the accused at the earliest and take swift action.

Chain-snatching at crowded public events has been a recurring concern in Jamshedpur. In recent months, the city has reported multiple incidents of theft and chain-snatching at markets and public gatherings, prompting demands for tighter security at such events.
