Tata Steel Foundation Launches Samvaad 2025 in Jamshedpur
12th Edition Marks Jharkhand’s Silver Jubilee and Birsa Munda’s 150th Birth Anniversary

JAMSHEDPUR – The 12th edition of Samvaad commenced at Gopal Maidan celebrating tribal culture alongside Jharkhand’s 25th foundation day and freedom fighter Birsa Munda’s sesquicentennial from November 15-19.
This year’s conclave brings together significant tribal representation. Participants come from 26 states and union territories. Moreover, 153 different tribes are represented at the gathering. The event aims to include nearly 50% tribal representation.
Growing Impact Since Inception
Samvaad started its journey back in 2014. Since then, it has evolved into a unique ecosystem. However, the platform has connected over 43,500 individuals. These people represent 333 tribes across India altogether.
The conclave fosters continuous dialogue among communities. It promotes cultural exchange and celebration simultaneously. On the other hand, it strengthens tribal identity nationwide.
Traditional Opening Ceremony
Tribal elders from Jharkhand inaugurated the event jointly. Tata Steel Foundation‘s senior leadership participated alongside them. Moreover, nine tribal children joined the ceremony too. This arrangement reflects Samvaad’s inter-generational character beautifully.
The children are carving their own paths forward. They represent the younger generation’s aspirations. Besides, their presence symbolizes continuity and cultural preservation.
Daily Activities and Celebrations
Each day features deliberations and festive celebrations. Visitors can explore 51 exhibition outlets at the venue. However, these showcase traditional tribal handicrafts extensively. Meanwhile, 30 dedicated stalls demonstrate indigenous healing practices.
The displays offer immersive experiences of tribal knowledge. Traditional craftsmanship gets highlighted through various demonstrations. In addition, visitors gain insights into ancestral wisdom.
Culinary Heritage Showcase
Atithya presents tribal cuisine journeys this year. The program brings together 19 home cooks altogether. Moreover, they represent 12 diverse tribal communities collectively. These cooks present distinctive tribal culinary traditions through attractive food stalls.
Unique tribal dishes are available on Zomato too. The Zomato counter opened at 3 PM Friday. However, it operates daily from 3 PM onwards. Services continue until 9 PM every evening thereafter.
Traditional Medicine Practitioners
Traditional healers represent 24 tribes from 12 states. They gather at 30 outlets in Gopal Maidan. Moreover, practitioners share traditional health practices with visitors. This year focuses on lifestyle disease treatments specifically.
Chiropractic medicine receives special attention at demonstrations. Infertility treatments use traditional methods extensively. Besides, various other indigenous healing approaches are showcased.
Handicrafts Exhibition
Gopal Maidan hosts a vibrant handicrafts display. The exhibition features 51 outlets presenting diverse artworks. However, artisans showcase 34 unique tribal art forms. These represent 30 tribes from 18 different states.
Home décor items attract significant visitor interest. Paintings display traditional artistic techniques beautifully. Moreover, textiles showcase intricate weaving patterns. Jewelry demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship throughout. In addition, blue pottery features prominently among exhibits.
Community Film Initiative
The ‘Community with’ initiative highlights cultural identity creatively. It uses films as storytelling mediums effectively. Moreover, the program promotes alternative development perspectives. These focus on tribal communities across India.
Seven national short film competitions occurred previously. The eighth edition is currently underway now. However, over 250 film entries were received overall. Meanwhile, 46 films gained recognition through this platform. Both new and experienced tribal filmmakers created these works.
Fellowship Programme Details
Samvaad Fellowship continues fostering grassroots cultural movements. This year’s program selected 34 participants carefully. However, selection happened from 572 total applications. These applications came from 26 states altogether. Moreover, candidates represented 122 different tribes collectively.
Fellows work at cultural preservation’s forefront actively. They have completed 70 intellectual property projects successfully. However, five projects will release during 2025. Besides, five new fellowships will be awarded this year.
The fellowship program demonstrates sustained commitment to preservation. It empowers community members as cultural ambassadors. Moreover, it ensures traditional knowledge passes to generations. On the other hand, it creates documentation of tribal heritage. The initiative strengthens cultural movements at grassroots levels. Meanwhile, fellows become advocates for their communities.
