Key Points:

  • Five convicted in 2017 Nagadih mob lynching incident
  • Victims included three youth and elderly woman killed over rumor
  • Court acquits other accused citing lack of evidence

JAMSHEDPUR – A local court sentenced five individuals to life imprisonment in the infamous Nagadih mob lynching case from 2017, where four people were killed over false child-lifting rumors.

Court’s Verdict

Additional District and Sessions Judge Vimalesh Kumar Sahay delivered the judgment. The court found five accused guilty of the crime.

The convicted individuals are Rajaram Hansda, Rengo Purti, Gopal Hansda, and others. Sunil Sardar and Tara Mandal also received life sentences. However, other accused were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

A total of 28 people faced charges initially. The case remained pending for eight long years. Justice has finally been served to the victims’ families.

The Tragic Incident

The horrific incident occurred on May 18, 2017. It took place in Nagadih under Bagbera police station. False rumors about child lifters sparked the violence.

An armed mob attacked three young men mercilessly. The victims were identified as Vikas Verma and Gautam Verma. Gangesh from Gadhbasa was also killed brutally.

The attack happened despite police presence at the scene. Moreover, the mob showed no mercy to anyone. The victims were beaten to death with weapons.

Elderly Woman’s Tragic Death

Ramsukhi Devi, aged 76, tried to save her grandsons. She pleaded with the mob repeatedly. However, nobody listened to her desperate appeals.

The violent crowd attacked her as well. She sustained critical injuries during the assault. On June 20, 2017, she succumbed to her wounds.

She was the grandmother of the three murdered youth. Her death added another tragedy to the case. The entire family was devastated by the losses.

Investigation and Trial

The investigation took considerable time to complete. In 2023, the FSL report arrived from Chandigarh. This report proved crucial for the prosecution.

Based on forensic evidence, five were convicted. Meanwhile, others walked free from the charges. Only Rajaram Hansda remained in custody throughout.

All other convicted accused were out on bail. The trial witnessed numerous hearings over years. A local source confirmed the complexity of evidence gathering.

Eyewitness Account

Uttam Verma witnessed the entire horrific incident firsthand. He filed the original complaint at Bagbera station. According to him, it was a well-planned conspiracy.

“The mob attacked despite police being present,” he stated. The police personnel themselves came under attack. Even today, memories of that night haunt him.

He believes justice remained incomplete in many ways. The family plans to approach the High Court. They seek stricter punishment for all involved.

FIR Details

The FIR named 15 specific individuals initially. It also included 300 unknown persons as accused. Village headman Rajaram Hansda topped the list.

Other named accused included Vibhishan Sardar and Babu Sardar. Ganesh Mandal, Subhash Hansda, and Doctor Mardi were listed. Several others from Nagadih village faced charges.

The case highlighted mob violence dangers in society. It exposed how rumors can destroy innocent lives. The incident sent shockwaves across the entire nation.

Impact on Families

The victim families suffered immensely over eight years. They waited patiently for justice to prevail. The court verdict brought some relief finally.

However, their pain remains undiminished till today. Three young lives were lost senselessly. An elderly woman died protecting her grandsons.

The families lost their primary earning members. They faced social and financial hardships subsequently. The trauma continues to affect them deeply.

Broader Context

Such mob lynching incidents plagued several Indian states. Jharkhand witnessed multiple cases during that period. False rumors on social media often triggered violence.

The Nagadih case became one of the most prominent. It drew national and international attention immediately. Human rights organizations condemned the incident strongly.

The incident raised questions about law enforcement effectiveness. It highlighted the need for better crowd control. Moreover, it emphasized checking rumor proliferation on digital platforms.

Legal Significance

This verdict sets an important legal precedent. It demonstrates that mob violence perpetrators face consequences. However, convicting only five out of 28 raised concerns.

Legal experts believe stronger evidence collection is needed. Witness protection measures require strengthening significantly. The case took exceptionally long to conclude.

Nevertheless, the life imprisonment sentences send a message. Communities must resist participating in mob justice. On the other hand, authorities need faster trial mechanisms.

Moving Forward

The victim families plan further legal action. They will approach the Jharkhand High Court soon. They seek enhanced punishment for the convicted.

Additionally, they want action against acquitted individuals. The family demands compensation for their losses. They also request witness protection for future proceedings.

A community leader emphasized reconciliation needs alongside justice. The village of Nagadih must heal from this. Both sides need support for moving forward.
