Former MP and ex-IPS officer enters race; two other candidatures submitted for key seats
Jharkhand’s upcoming Assembly elections see former Jamshedpur MP Dr. Ajoy Kumar file for Jamshedpur East seat.
JAMSHEDPUR – As was expected, and widely conjectured too, Dr. Ajoy Kumar, ex-MP and former IPS officer, has submitted his candidature for the Jamshedpur East Assembly seat in Jharkhand.
There are no ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ now. He aspires to contest the assembly elections from Jamshedpur East seat and would be, most possibly, taking on Saryu Roy as JD (U), and possibly NDA, candidate.
Dr. Ajoy Kumar has been active in the city during the last couple of months, or to be exact, just after the parliamentary elections.
The former AICC in-charge for Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry presented his nomination to East Singhbhum’s Executive District President (City), Dharmendra Sonkar.
Jamshedpur East is considered one of the most fiercely contested constituencies in East Singhbhum district.
Sonkar expressed the community’s anticipation, stating, "Jamshedpur East Assembly was eagerly awaiting its universally accepted leader, Dr. Ajoy Kumar, the messiah of the poor and needy."
Two additional candidature applications were submitted to the state office in Ranchi on the same day.
Dharmendra Sonkar filed for Jamshedpur West, while Surendra Kumar Jha alias Bablu Jha applied for Jamshedpur East.
Dr. Kumar’s entry has generated excitement across various sections of society in Jamshedpur East.
His unique image and background as a dynamic ex-IPS officer with strong management skills are seen as potential game-changers.
Local political analyst Ravi Sharma commented, "Dr. Kumar’s candidature brings a fresh perspective to the constituency. His diverse experience in law enforcement and national politics could significantly influence voter sentiment."
However, not all are so positive on his candidature. There is no dearth of people who see him as an ‘opportunist’ who ‘jumps into’ a party and then ‘jumps out’ according to his convenience either.
His so called ‘selective politicking’ has also earned many brickbats from his critics who point out to his tendency to create controversies where there are none and remain silence on issues that are ‘uncomfortable’ for him, e.g violence against Hindus in Bangladesh or the doctor’s murder in Kolkata.
The announcement has reshaped the electoral landscape, with supporters viewing his candidacy as a boost for the Congress party’s prospects in the region.
As the election approaches, all eyes are on Jamshedpur East to see how Dr. Kumar’s campaign unfolds and impacts the political dynamics of the constituency.
