RAMGARH – Acting on a secret tip-off, the Ranchi Narcotics team conducted a night raid at Barkakana Railway Station and seized 88 kg of ganja from a coach of the Tata Jammu Tawi Express.
The Barkakana Railway Police, working in coordination with the Ranchi Narcotics team, carried out the operation aboard Train No. 18101. The contraband was recovered from coach B-4 of the train, which runs between Jamshedpur and Jammu Tawi.
Three ganja smugglers were arrested from the spot during the raid. In addition, the entire seized consignment has been officially valued at approximately Rs 45 lakh.
Following the arrest, the Narcotics team took all three accused to Ranchi for further questioning and legal proceedings. Meanwhile, the Barkakana Railway Police have registered a formal case in the matter.
The Tata Jammu Tawi Express, Train No. 18101, is a major long-distance train connecting Jharkhand with northern India. However, the train route has previously come under scrutiny for being used by drug traffickers to transport contraband across state lines.
On the other hand, the Ranchi Narcotics unit has intensified its operations in recent months. The anti-drug drive has led to several major seizures across Jharkhand railway stations in the past year.
Authorities are now investigating the supply chain to determine the origin of the seized ganja and the possible network behind the drug trafficking operation. A knowledgeable source said the consignment was likely being transported from Odisha or West Singhbhum toward northern India via the railway route.
