RANCHI – A police jawan of the Tiger Mobile unit was injured on Tuesday after a mob attacked a team conducting a raid against brown sugar trafficking in the Hindpiri police station area of the state capital. The clash took place in Nizam Nagar, triggering tension across the locality.

Acting on secret information about the sale and purchase of brown sugar and other narcotics in the area, Tiger Mobile personnel reached the spot as part of an ongoing drive to identify and act against locations involved in drug trade in Ranchi. The operation is part of the police’s continuing effort to make the capital free of drugs.

As the police team attempted to detain those allegedly involved in the narcotics trade, anti-social elements present at the scene incited a crowd, which then surrounded and assaulted one of the jawans. The attack left the entire area tense following the assault on the police team by those allegedly involved in the trafficking.

A large police contingent, including the ASP of Kotwali, personnel from Hindpiri police station and the Kotwali station in-charge, rushed to Nizam Nagar upon receiving information about the assault. The team worked to bring the situation under control while launching raids to identify and arrest those involved in the attack on the police.

Additional police forces have been deployed across the area as a precautionary measure, officials said. Kotwali ASP Nikhil Rai, briefing reporters on the incident, said police had received information that a Tiger Mobile jawan on patrol duty in the Hindpiri area had been assaulted by a group of individuals.

“Those involved in the assault on the police jawan have been identified, and raids are underway for their arrest,” Rai said, adding that Ranchi police would deal strictly with anyone found misbehaving with police personnel. He said the injured jawan had not suffered any serious injury and was in a stable condition.
