Kurmi Community Rallies for Tribal Status and Language Recognition in Jharkhand

Demand for Scheduled Tribe Status and Kudmali Language Inclusion Gains Momentum

The call for recognizing the Kudmi and Kurmi (Mahto) as Scheduled Tribes and including the Kudmali language in the Eighth Schedule has intensified in Jharkhand, marked by a significant Kudmali Hunkar rally in Ranchi’s Morabadi Ground.

RANCHI – The Kurmi community’s push for tribal status and language recognition saw a new peak with the Kudmali Hunkar rally, drawing participants from various districts to press for their demands.

Speakers at the rally issued a stark warning to the BJP and the central government, indicating political repercussions in the Lok Sabha elections if their demands are unmet.

The historical context reveals that the Kurmi were classified as Scheduled Tribes before 1931 but were reclassified due to alleged conspiracies.

Historical Context and Current Demands

Kurmi leader Sunita Devi emphasized the community’s similarities with Scheduled Tribes in lifestyle and dialect, questioning their current OBC classification.

The rally underscored the community’s deprivation from government schemes, highlighting the urgency for recognizing their rights.

Political Implications and Mobilization

Sheetal Ohedar, a community patron, pointed out the potential electoral impact of ignoring Kurmi demands, with a significant threat posed to BJP’s performance in upcoming Lok Sabha seats.

The community’s awakening and readiness to assert their rights were emphasized, alongside a call for the state government to advocate for their inclusion as Scheduled Tribes.
