Sonari Shopkeepers Refuse Rent Hike, Demand Written Order from JNAC

Kagalnagar and Gudri Bazaar Traders Halt Payments, Seek Transparent System

Key Points:

  • JNAC hiking rents from March 2026 without prior notice or written order
  • Shopkeepers refuse revised rent until official written order is provided
  • Traders demand structured payment system via counter, online, bank or post office

JAMSHEDPUR – Shopkeepers at Kagalnagar Bazaar and Gudri Bazaar in Sonari, Jamshedpur, are up in arms over a sudden rent hike imposed on shops leased from Tata Steel, demanding that authorities produce a written order justifying the increase.

The traders say they have been running these leased shops for years and have been regularly paying the fixed rent.

These shops have been sustaining the livelihoods of their families over that period.

However, since March 2026, officials of the JNAC — the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee — have been demanding a higher rent from them.

No prior notice was given before this revision was enforced.

When shopkeepers sought an explanation, they were not given a satisfactory answer.

Moreover, no one could tell them under which rule or order the rent had been raised.

In response, the traders have decided to withhold payment of the enhanced rent for now.

They have made it clear that they will continue to pay only the earlier rent amount.

They will resume payment of the revised rent only after they receive a copy of the official written order authorising the increase.

In addition, the shopkeepers have raised concerns about the payment mechanism itself.

They have demanded that a proper system be put in place for depositing rent at the older rate.

Specifically, they want facilities to pay through counter, online mode, bank or post office, with a receipt being issued for every transaction.

The Jamshedpur traders have appealed to the administration to intervene at the earliest.

They want the situation clarified and a fair resolution arrived at without further delay.

The JNAC has in the past also faced disputes over its administrative decisions related to commercial properties.

Meanwhile, the broader issue of rent revision transparency in Jamshedpur markets has been a recurring concern among small traders operating under civic authority leases.
