New Enclosures for Gharials, Crocodiles at Tata Steel Zoo Boost Visitor Experience

People cheer the latest addition of gharials and crocodiles at Tata Steel Zoological Park, enhancing visitor attractions with state-of-the-art enclosures.

JAMSHEDPUR – The Tata Steel Zoological Park in Jamshedpur marks a significant addition to its wildlife attractions by introducing a pair of crocodiles from North Bengal Wild Animal Park, Siliguri.

This move follows the earlier introduction of four gharials and two marsh crocodiles from Nandankanan Zoological Park, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, in 1997.

Introducing these species, Tata Steel Zoological Park becomes a pioneer in the Eastern Region by offering the unique "Glass View" feature in the gharial and marsh crocodile enclosures.

This innovation follows Tata Steel Zoological Park’s distinction as India’s second facility, after Green Zoo, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, Jamnagar, Gujarat, to install water filtration plants in gharial and crocodile enclosures.

The Magar (Marsh Crocodile) pond, an impressive 320 square meters in size, can hold up to 3.2 lakh litres of water.

Adjacent to it, the Gharial pond is equally impressive, spanning 300 square meters and holding 7.5 lakh litres of water.

These state-of-the-art enclosures are designed to meet all biological needs of the animals, including a separate pond for sick or newly arrived animals, a hatchling care area, and a water filtration unit.

The inauguration of these facilities was a notable event, graced by Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel, and President, Tata Steel Zoological Society, along with other distinguished guests.

In conclusion, the Tata Steel Zoological Park’s latest additions of gharials and crocodiles, housed in advanced enclosures, promise a more engaging and educational experience for visitors in the new year.
