Rising Kharkai, Subarnarekha Rivers Prompt Warning in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur on high alert due to rising Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers; Dist Admn issues alert warning.

JAMSHEDPUR – The district administration has issued a warning owing to rising Kharkai and Subarnarekha river levels due to heavy rains.

The Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers are above and approaching the danger level, respectively.

Authorities advise citizens to be cautious, particularly in coastal and submerged regions around these rivers.

The DC of East Singhbhum Mr. Manjunath Bhajantri, in a tweet said: “Due to incessant rains in the district, at present the Kharkai river is flowing .46 m above the danger mark, while the water level of Subarnarekha is also continuously increasing. 1-1 gate of Kharkai and Bankabal dams have been opened, 500 cumecs water has also been released from Chandil dam.”

He further added: “People living in the coastal areas and submergence areas of both the rivers are appealed to be alert and safe. Subarnarekha River- Danger level(metre)- 121.50, Present level(metre)- 119.20 (at Mango Bridge Site) Kharkai River- Danger level(metre)- 129.00, Present level(metre)- 129.46.”

The government has ordered special officials of local urban authorities including Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee, Mango Notified Area Committee, and Jugsalai Municipality to coordinate emergency evacuations and flash flood management in susceptible regions 24/7.

Water has also infiltrated low-lying neighborhoods like some low-lying Bagbera’s Basti areas, affecting life.

The Chandil Dam gates opened, letting water into Ichagarh hamlet, worrying displaced inhabitants.

The dam water level is rising, and the displaced fear their areas may be swamped again.
