Street Vendors Resist Administration Attempt to Reclaim Land in Jamshedpur
Spat in Sakchi Bazar, Jamshedpur, as local vendors and authorities dispute over the rightful claim over land.
JAMSHEDPUR – A dispute has erupted between some of the local street vendors and the district administration in Jamshedpur.
The conflict arose in Sakchi Bazar, near the fruit market, where the police encountered strong resistance from the shopkeepers while trying to evict them.
According to the police, the land in contention belongs to TOP and needs to be reclaimed.
Despite multiple eviction notices served to the vendors, they remain defiant.
The purpose of the eviction is to cordon off TOP’s land.
On the other side of the conflict, the vendors assert that they have been making a living off this land for the past 70 years by setting up temporary shops.
They claim to have received a token from JNAC.
According to the vendors, an individual stated that the land had been allocated to him by JNAC, which is why he came to take possession of it.
This conflict between the temporary shopkeepers and the TOP police over the ownership of the land has resulted in a stalemate.
The police maintain that the land rightfully belongs to TOP and any interference will result in legal action.
Yet again in Jamshedpur, the district police and the roadside shopkeepers find themselves at odds over the occupation of the footpath shops.
