Shopkeepers re-open to find books soaked in water, wait for customers
Jamshedpur: Cyclone Yaas has caused irreparable damage to the business of old books in Sakchi. Several shops have been badly damaged due to rain water that seeped into their closed shops.
With Unlock 1.0 starting in the state today, the shopkeepers opened their shops and found that the cyclone had not only damaged the books, but had also left them in a completely devastated state.
The shopkeepers came to know about the damage caused by Cyclone Yaas after they reached their shops in Sakchi today Thursday morning for opening them.
Shopkeepers say that their tin roofed shops were no protection against Yaas Cycline and rain water did cause a lot of damage.
On Thursday, all the shopkeepers were seen drying the books soaked in water in the sun.
A shopkeeper Rajiv Kumar said that due to the closure of the shop for 50 days during the Corona period, the financial condition of most of the shopkeepers has worsened.
The shops have been opened on the first day of Unlock 1.0 on orders of the government.
Sakchi has 32 shops dealing in old books. Cyclone has affected almost all the shops. All the books are being dried in the sun.
At the same time, he said, the shopkeepers are also waiting for customers, while trying to salvage whatever is left undamaged. He expressed hope that with time the number of footfalls would see an increase. For now, there are hardly any customers visiting their shops.
