Key Points:
- Khushbu Singh of Sakchi Gurudwara Basti is under treatment at Tata Main Hospital
- CCTV footage released by district police disproves crowd’s allegation against traffic cops
- Quick Response Team deployed to disperse angry mob and restore traffic flow
JAMSHEDPUR – A woman riding a scooter was seriously injured after being struck by a pickup van near the RD Tata Roundabout in the Golmuri police station area on Sunday, triggering a road blockade and a confrontation with police after a false rumour spread about the role of traffic personnel in the accident.
The injured woman was identified as Khushbu Singh, a resident of Sakchi Gurudwara Basti. Following the collision, bystanders helped rush her to Tata Main Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment. Her condition remained serious.
However, trouble broke out soon after. A rumour quickly spread among the gathering crowd that a policeman on traffic duty had suddenly stepped in front of Singh’s scooter, causing her to lose balance and fall, after which the pickup van ran her over. Incensed by this claim, a large number of people surrounded the traffic personnel on duty and raised slogans against the traffic police. They also blocked the road, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill.
The situation deteriorated rapidly. The police administration responded by dispatching a Quick Response Team to the spot. Officers spent considerable time persuading the agitated crowd before finally managing to clear the road and restore normal traffic flow.
The matter took a decisive turn when the district police released CCTV footage of the incident. The video showed clearly that Singh had been travelling from Jamshedpur’s Sakchi towards Burmalines when her scooter collided directly with the oncoming pickup van. No police checking activity or officer movement appeared anywhere in the footage as a cause of the accident.
DSP Traffic Neeraj Pathak said the crash had no connection whatsoever with any ongoing traffic checking drive. He urged residents not to spread rumours about any incident and to verify facts before reacting.
This incident was not isolated in a broader context. Road accidents in Jamshedpur claimed 24 lives and left 14 injured in April alone. Meanwhile, allegations against traffic police have surfaced on multiple recent occasions. Traffic checking drives have earlier triggered public protests in the city. A separate incident in Azad Nagar also attracted attention when a pregnant woman was allegedly made to stand in the heat during a checking operation. Earlier, a road accident in Sitaramdera had similarly set off public anger in the city.
Sakchi Traffic Station in-charge Saryu Anand confirmed that a full investigation into the Golmuri accident was underway. Preliminary findings indicated that Singh had sustained injuries solely due to the impact of the pickup van. Further action was in progress, he said.
