JAMSHEDPUR — Thieves broke into a jewellery shop at Tank Road in Mango Bazar, Mango police station area, in the early hours of Sunday, making away with around 4 kilograms of silver jewellery and approximately Rs 8,000 in cash.
The targeted establishment was Kolkata Jewellers, located on Tank Road in Mango Bazar. The theft came to light when shop owner Jitendra Kumar arrived to open the shop on Sunday morning and found the interior in complete disarray.
Kumar told police that he had closed the shop and left for home at around 8:30 pm on Saturday night. On returning Sunday morning, he discovered that a burglary had taken place. He immediately alerted the Mango police station.
Meanwhile, investigators found that the intruders had gained entry by cutting through two layers of tin sheeting on the roof of the shop. They then climbed inside and systematically ransacked the premises, taking away the silver ornaments and the cash kept in the cash box.
However, the thieves were unable to crack the iron safe inside the shop. Despite attempting to break it open, they failed. As a result, the gold jewellery stored inside the safe remained untouched.
In addition, the incident has spread fear among traders and residents in the Mango locality. On receiving information about the theft, the Mango police reached the scene and launched an investigation.
On the other hand, police teams are currently scanning the footage from CCTV cameras installed in and around the area in an attempt to identify the perpetrators. The crime investigation is ongoing.
“We closed the shop at around 8:30 in the evening on Saturday and when I came to open in the morning, I found everything scattered,” said Jitendra Kumar, the shop owner. He said the loss on account of the silver jewellery stolen ran into lakhs of rupees.
The Jamshedpur police have not yet made any arrests in connection with the case. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
