SERAIKELA – A long road blockade continued for nearly 20 hours in the Seraikela region after a fatal accident on the Ukri–Kharsawan route near Jagarnathpur village.
The incident occurred on Saturday around 7 p.m. when a speeding highwa struck biker Jiten Nayak. However, he died at the spot. He was a resident of Dhatkideeh.
Angry villagers reacted immediately. They blocked the road using bamboo and stones. Meanwhile, vehicles formed long queues on the Ukri–Kharsawan–Seraikela route.
The blockade caused severe disruptions. However, officials reached the site soon after. Circle Inspector Nitin Kumar Singh tried to calm the crowd.
The family and villagers initially demanded fifteen lakh rupees. They refused to lift the blockade. Moreover, they insisted on a written assurance.
Police officials stayed at the location throughout the night. Seraikela Police Station in-charge Vinay Kumar remained present. Kharsawan Police Station in-charge Gaurav Kumar also camped there.
Administration representatives first proposed one lakh rupees. However, villagers rejected it. Several rounds of talks continued on Sunday.
A settlement was reached by afternoon. The vehicle owner agreed to provide two lakh rupees as assistance. After this, the villagers removed the blockade.
Traffic movement returned to normal. Meanwhile, police sent the body for post-mortem to Sadar Hospital, Seraikela.
Tense moments prevailed in the area for some time. However, the administration managed the situation peacefully.
Similar protest situations have occurred earlier in the region. A previous accident had sparked unrest, as noted in a related report. Another fatal mishap triggered demonstrations in a highway blockade.
Protests also followed a worker’s death at a factory, detailed earlier. Meanwhile, a recent accident near Rajnagar drew attention in the district. Another protest demanding compensation was recorded last year.
