Key Points:
- Illegal mining operation at closed ECL site claims four lives in Dhanbad
- Multiple workers still trapped inside collapsed mine shaft
- Hundreds reportedly worked daily at abandoned Kapasara facility
DHANBAD – Four workers died when an illegal coal mine collapsed in Nirsa, Dhanbad on Sunday morning, with several others feared trapped inside the shaft.
The accident occurred at the abandoned Kapasara Outsourcing site. It falls under ECL’s Mugma Area jurisdiction. However, the facility has remained closed for operations.
The mine’s upper section collapsed suddenly around morning hours. Workers were conducting illegal excavation at the time. In addition, mining equipment and workers’ belongings lay scattered near the entrance.
Local residents reported the incident involved extensive casualties. Family members of deceased workers reached the location. Moreover, they were seen crying near the site.
Coal mafia allegedly hid some bodies from authorities. The entrance shows signs of hasty concealment efforts. Meanwhile, district administration has not confirmed the incident officially.
Dhanbad police maintained silence on the matter. Neither police nor administration issued official statements. Furthermore, verification of actual casualty numbers remains pending.
Hundreds of laborers work at this abandoned mine daily. Operations run from 4 AM until 9 PM. On the other hand, such illegal mining activities continue despite ECL security presence.
Local residents and outsiders collaborate in illegal extraction. The operation runs on significant scale undetected. Besides, multiple deaths often go unreported from such sites.
Clearing the entrance debris could reveal more bodies inside. Workers’ clothes and materials remain scattered around the pit. In contrast, the site now stands completely deserted.
ECL security personnel are deployed at the location. Yet large-scale illegal mining operations continued unhindered for months. Questions arise about security effectiveness and monitoring gaps.
An ECL team visited the site for inspection. Officials acknowledged illegal excavation activities in subdued tones. Moreover, they confirmed ongoing filling operations at the facility.
ECL continuously fills abandoned mining pits across the area. Workers repeatedly open new entrance points for extraction. However, enforcement actions have failed to stop such operations.
The company maintains regular filling work at closed sites. Despite these efforts, illegal miners breach security measures. Meanwhile, crackdown operations in the region continue periodically.
Coal theft networks operate sophisticated extraction systems. They exploit abandoned government mining infrastructure systematically. In addition, vehicle seizures in related cases have increased recently.
The Kapasara site represents broader illegal mining challenges facing Jharkhand. Enforcement agencies struggle to control abandoned mine exploitation. Furthermore, worker safety remains completely unaddressed in such operations.
