JAMSHEDPUR – Police announced a breakthrough in the high-profile Vardhman Jewelers loot case of Sonari, arresting three criminals from Bihar and Palamu and recovering weapons and vehicles.
City SP Kumar Shivashish informed that the arrests followed inputs from technical surveillance and secret sources. The Special Investigation Team, formed by SSP East Singhbhum, led the operation.
The main accused, Vishnu Shankar Rai, was nabbed in Bhojpuri, Bihar. On his lead, Saurabh Mehta alias Sonu was caught from Mali police station area in Aurangabad, Bihar, while Suraj Kumar was arrested from Hariharganj in Palamu.
Police said Suraj Kumar revealed the location of the Hyundai Alcazar used in the crime, which was recovered. Meanwhile, Rai admitted throwing his country-made pistol near Dobho bridge after the incident. The weapon, along with magazine and cartridges, was seized.
The seized items included:
- One country-made pistol with magazine and two live rounds
- One Hyundai Alcazar (JH01FA7150)
- Two Pulsar bikes (JH01CW1973 and JH14F2939)
- Three smartphones and two keypad phones
During interrogation, the accused confessed to carrying out the daylight robbery at Vardhman Jewelers on September 3. Police confirmed that the incident was executed by a notorious interstate gang.
Investigators had earlier scanned over 100 CCTV footage clips. However, some accused remain absconding, and raids are continuing to trace them.
